We had a great time meeting Luke Carman (An Elegant Young Man, Giramondo) on 9th May. The value of his comments went beyond helping the writers whose work he was reviewing. We plan to re-cap insights from this workshop and our previous special guest events. What have we learned from experienced writers? What are we doing about it!
Saturday 23rd May is the last date our gatherings can be held at the soon-to-be-closed Mars Hill Cafe address of 331 Church Street Parramatta. Sad though we are – we’re going to celebrate the memories! Free entry, free cheesecake, revisiting some award-winning pieces and an open mic. We wish the Mars Hill Cafe all the best in their hunt for a new location – an unforgettable team with a proud community history of supporting artists, writers, musicians and the caffeine dependent….
June 13 and 27 gatherings will probably be held in Parramatta CBD but from July onwards our long-term address will change. As soon as we have confirmation we’ll give you the details. Many thanks to Sue Chamoun who scouted out all the venues.
Don’t forget the big due date of midnight, 25th May for your writing entries to ZineWest 2015 – competition for new Western Sydney writers.
(Art entries due 25th June)
GATHERING DATES in April 2014 are Saturdays 12th and 26th.
1. When I was eleven… What did you read? How did you see the world? How did you imagine your future? Write as much as you want, but please share no more than five minutes worth!
2. Fact/Fiction… How do we write ‘real’ stories as interesting as good fiction? When we write fiction, how much of our own life do we draw on?

Our first gathering for 2014, on Saturday 8, is the closest we can get to Valentine’s Day and yes, we do have a tradition of encouraging the romantics among us to bring something on the theme of love. It need not conform to any soppy stereotype – whatever seems true to you. You are of course welcome to read instead from your breathtaking international spy novel or the haiku on a frog you scribbled that morning…
Our 2014 gatherings are held on

NEW Writers Group inc President Carol Amos and the committee wish you and yours very happy holidays. We thank all our supporters, especially our financial members, who help us encourage writers and writing in Western Sydney. We hope the summer snow on our site – courtesy of WordPress which is US based – offers some nostalgia to our members born in different climes.
In the planning: a February session on what we need to know about copyright (and some of the famous breaches of faith in Australian literary history); a special open mic on 26th April to reflect on ANZAC day themes and how we write about conflict.
